A Boarders Life

Maybe it’s a time of life thing? When I rediscovered a portfolio of school photos they brought back a lot of memories.

Old Boys Remember

Congratulations on your Web Site. I was in Moyes from 64-67 not all happy memories. Keep the good work up (I live in Australia).
Regards, Ron Harrison

Pretty good stuff so far - its interesting that you should refer to a time of life for doing this sought of thing. I contacted an old boy who then came from Fiji but now resides in Aussie - I was browsing through the NPBHS Website and ended up penning a huge dissertation on our school days - perhaps it is only now that our memories are such that we remember the good times because as you might remember the first few years at school were fairly hairy to say the least.
Keep up the good work - I await the evolving outcome.
John Jolly
(Moyes - 63 to 68)

Even as a day boy, I enjoyed the memories. Thanks, John Harris 62-66

Hi Roger,
Thanks for sharing that and well done!
Cheers Nigel

You are doing an excellent job. I was a dayboy over the same period. I now live in Spain. Pleased to see any visitors to this end of the woods.

Roger, What an interesting site, brought back great memories with the photos of all the Pridham guys I went through school with, many I have not seen in 40 years. I will attempt to find some of my old photos for you, others might have the same. I remember the fun of the great food strike and recognise a number of Pridham guys at the front of your photo, Droop Wakelin, Tim Henderson, Phytes Goldsbury, Peter Jackson et al. Went to a great Rugby/Rowing reunion with Hoppy Lynch and JJ Stewart last year at school, very emotional and pleasant time for JJ and all of us as JJ's health was failing. He had more than a tear in his eye when all but two members of the 1962 Maadi Cup Rowing VIII (I was the cox) rowed up the Waitara River. Hoppy Lynch loved it as well and as usual Max Carroll had done a great job of organising activities.
Cheers Roger Dickie Pridham 1959-64

Hi Roger. Neat site, and I hunted it keenly for a shot of my brother Terry, who was in Pridham around this same time. (I think probably 1961 to 1965) and was a prefect in his last year. I also did my time as a boarder in Pridham, though not with any accomplishments for my time there. I did recognise some juniors in your photos who went on to be my heroes when I was there, like the Gibbs guy who was head boy of the school (from Pridham) in my first year. Lynn Bublitz was housemaster while I was there, Mr Herbert one of the assistants. Fish Hatherly was the bane of my time there, not only because I was a durry hole regular, but because I had him teach me every year there, first two years in Latin (a, a, ae,) and three more for French. A cruel world indeed. Many the beating I got from him with his converted razor strop.

Hi Roger
Just finally re-wading through my copy of "Through the Gates" for April and found your website recommended.
I’ve looked through the photo gallery and what memories. I spent my first year at the old Niger House and dear old Max was our house master. In ‘62 I moved up to Pridham so recognise most of the guys in your photos, especially interesting was the one of the food strike, I remember it vividly but cannot find myself in the picture. My brother Denis was also at Pridham starting in 63 so you may remember us. I was "Jack" Horner and he was "Little Jack".
Best Regards and keep up the good works

Hi Roger
You have brought back some old memories after viewing your photos and your memories. I guess it is a time of life thing as when I went to the 100th I said never again as it was too drawn out but I may now reconsider for Easter next year!!
I was in Pridham from 1957 to 1961 so I was shocked when I went back for the 100th to find it had been demolished. We really were a cut above those who went to Carrington or Moyes or Niger!!
Alan Wakelin came from a farm just over the back from where I grew up in the South Waikato.
He had three older brothers who all went through Pridham (my two older brothers also went through as well) and the identical twins Ritchie and Robbie were class mates of mine from primary school at Tokoroa East right through to upper sixth at NPBHS.
The photo that really brought back memories was the strike outside the dining room in 1962 as the prefects of course were all a year behind me!
I was talking to a business associate recently in Tauranga, Grant Garner, and we were talking about high school and his brother, Ross, went through Pridham with my brothers Dave & John. He told me he had a nugget brush which his brother gave him which still had a name and a locker number on it – J R Wood 99 – so he gave it to me and so I will return it to its rightful owner when I next see John!!
Kind regards

Maybe it’s a time of life thing?

Hard to tell really, but when I rediscovered a portfolio of school photos they brought back a lot of memories - some good and some less so. So in 2003 I put together a web site to record what I remembered.

In 2008 I thought it was time to use a social network platform to make A Boarders' Life even more interactive.

The boarding house where I spent those formative years no longer exists. In truth, I have only been back once to the school and that was many years after I left. Even then I didn’t recognise most of what I saw although the arched entrance remains, with memories of socks pulled high and straightened caps.

This site is an attempt to recapture some of those times in the sixties and I hope those of you who shared these moments with me will recognise yourselves. My current career as a Director of Online Operations has given me the skills, such as they are, to compile this virtual compendium. To these images I have added the odd anecdote or two. The laundry tags have long disappeared from my clothing but the residual feeling of ice-cold football practice on the raceourse remains !

Now you can read the latest version of Through The Gates online. Simply click on the image to see the large screen version and click the arrows on the edges to open the pages.

2009 and all that

Time to add a blog entry. Since my last post I have taken up employment as Director of Online Operations (East Asia) for the British Council, still based in Singapore.

This means a bit of travelling around East Asia and also to Australia and NZ which is part of my beat. It's been three years since I left NZ so towards to the end of this year (economy permitting) I might pay a flying visit to Godzone.

Many of us living overseas have been following news events from TV3 on the internet except in… Continue

News from Chook

Hugh (Chook) Sutherland got in touch. Here is some abbreviated information he sent me personally.

I ended up farming (Dairy) and bought a farm a bit closer to the coast than where you would have stayed with me, my home. We still have it although these days it is leased out and just last May we moved into Hawera. I have been married now for 35 years, have a son and a daughter. Val and I both work full time. Val, a primary principal at kakaramea, a community between here and Patea, and I am gener… Continue

Jumpin Jack Flash

Hello Roger (Ringo),
I still hear the chords of Jumpin Jack Flash ringing in my ears. Great photo collection & memories - I was also a member of now disappeared Pridham House - it was the best!
One of the rugby photos may have been from the Pridham - Moyes Junior final where Lynch won the game with a conversion from the touch line just before the final whistle. All the best.

Bob McCaw's Visit To Singapore

Bob McCaw dropped in to see me at the National University of Singapore today. He brought with him some precious photos from the Pridham Album that he started when he was house master in the 1960's.
I have added these into the site - see the photos section. And yes... I remember the hair dying incident vividly!

A Good Read

Brought back a lot of memories-the school, the dorm, the food, the teachers (fish, butterballs, freakbeak), playing soccer for the 1st and 2nd XI, dances with the girls from NPGHS and of course, the education.

Being there for only a year and from overseas, it was an interesting cultural experience for me meeting pakehas, maoris, islanders and fellow Asians all at the same place.

The boarder's life was a good cultural melting pot that helped me to mix with and integrate into the local lifestyle f… Continue
